Romeo, Michigan, July 18, 2019 – With a vast knowledge of 3D printing and a desire to help those in need, L&L Products’ Product Development Engineering Intern, Samuel Addy, discovered eNABLE, an organization designed to “Give The World a Helping Hand.”
eNABLE is a global network of volunteers who use their 3D printers to create free 3D printed hands and arms for those in need of an upper limb assistive device.
Using L&L Products’ 3D printers, Samuel constructed two hands (one grey and one black and red) sized to fit young children. The 3D printed hands have the ability to pick up objects with just a bend of the wrist. By bending the wrist, the fingers collapse and close to a fine grip, allowing tiny objects to be picked up with high precision. Samuel printed, assembled, and calibrated the hand to optimum performance.
“I have always had a passion for prosthetics and the engineering that goes into them. When my manager told me about this project I was ecstatic to work on it. Not only is it an exciting technology to work with, but it’s also for an amazing cause,” Addy said.
The process by which the hands get delivered to their recipients is anonyms. Contributors such as L&L, print, package, and mail the prosthetics directly to eNABLE. From there, eNABLE distributes the prosthetics to the recipients.
According to the eNABLE website, a professionally made, muscle-actuated hand can cost around $6,000 to $10,000, with much more of the cost from the materials and parts alone. eNABLE estimates 1,800 hands have been developed and delivered to children around the world for free.
